This week, we talked about Flaubert and Mme Bovary. The task this time was to “reveal a character’s psychology and disillusionment through the contrast between their expectations and their reality”

David had been waiting all day for a sign, a message, a photo, anything to let him know that the guy he’d been messaging lately was still up for a date. Uncertainty kept him in a strange state, a mix of hopeful anticipation and grounded reality. Social media apps often left him feeling this way, especially given his recent experiences with the people on the other side of the screen.
Yet, David had memorised this guy’s facial features, his lips, even the shape of his eyes. The appointed day was drawing near, but there was still no sign. For the thousandth time, he opened the app and tapped on the profile of his prospective date. Finally, those ellipses indicating the other person’s presence popped up on the screen. They paused. They came back to life, then froze once more. The next time he checked the app, the profile was no longer available.
COMMENTARY
I have chosen to talk about social media and its capacity to keep us embroiled, making us scroll and scroll, or forever checking for new updates feeding our dopamine receptors for the next ping. That combined with the expectations and realties of the content we are consuming makes it a true subject for disillusionment.
