iOS 18 – Some of what’s new in security

Alongside its new iPhone launch, Apple has introduced iOS 18, bringing a host of advanced security and privacy features. While some tech commentators view the hardware updates as incremental, iOS 18 introduces significant changes in data protection, including an enhanced Password Manager and better privacy controls. These updates offer more control over personal and business contacts and allow users to secure sensitive apps on shared devices.

Privacy professionals believe that iOS 18 simplifies privacy protections, making them more accessible for everyday users. Here’s an overview of some key features:

A Standalone Passwords App

iOS 18 introduces a new standalone Passwords app, expanding upon the iCloud Keychain. This app simplifies password management and encourages stronger privacy practices. It notifies users if their passwords have been compromised in a breach or if they are weak and reused. As always, Apple itself cannot access your passwords, but the app allows users to manage them across iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Vision Pro, and even Windows devices.

The app categorises passwords into groups such as verification codes, passkeys, and Wi-Fi credentials, allowing users to organise them for family, work, or other contexts.

Lock and Hide Apps for Enhanced Privacy

A new feature in iOS 18 allows users to lock or hide apps for added privacy. While system apps cannot be hidden, most App Store apps can be. This feature is particularly useful when lending your device to others without granting access to sensitive apps. Locked or hidden apps remain unsearchable, and their notifications are suppressed. Users can unlock these apps using Face ID, Touch ID, or their passcode. However, this functionality is restricted for children under 13, with parental controls available for users aged 13 to 18.

More Control Over Contact Sharing

iOS 18 provides finer control over how contacts are shared with apps. You can now choose to share all, none, or only selected contacts, making it easier to restrict access to work contacts, for example. Users are prompted to review app permissions when updating, encouraging them to reassess how much access each app really needs.

Clearer Insights into Data Access

Apple has streamlined the process of viewing which apps have access to sensitive information such as your location, calendar, files, and health data. A comprehensive list is now available, helping users manage their privacy settings more effectively.

AI Privacy Protections

Apple has introduced Apple Intelligence, a new AI platform that processes data locally on your device, ensuring your personal information remains private. This system allows AI to perform complex tasks using server-based models while maintaining robust privacy protections. This addresses growing concerns about how personal data might be used to train AI models.

iOS 18 is packed with features designed to give users more control and transparency over their data, enhancing security while taking full advantage of Apple’s latest technology.
